the way to earn stars is, basically, to post helpful messages. admins, when they spot a useful message, will increase your rating - admins can also lower your rating.

10 starpoints gets you a yellow star and a 'report' button, and 5 yellow stars make a red. 4 red stars gives players access to the 'chuckle' button. starpoints range from -50 to 1000.
